Hester Vaizey is a lecturer in Modern European History, and a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge.


Her first book Surviving Hitler's War was shortlisted for the Women's History Network Prize and won the prestigious Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History.


Her second book Keep Britain Tidy and other posters from the Nanny State is an edited collection of British government posters from the postwar era.


Hester's new book, Born in the GDR: Living in the Shadow of the Wall, was published by Oxford University Press in October 2014. The book has been widely praised as 'a little gem of a book' (Ian Birrell, The Daily Mail) and 'A carefully researched exploration of a disappeared society' (Anne McElvoy, The Economist).
